The only potential side effect that coincides with my being prescribed Nifedipine is weight loss. The loss was gradual but steady. I have an underactive thyroid and over the years, dispite no change in eating habits since my early 30’s, my weight just went up and up.
Average weight between 25-32 was 130-135 lbs. From 32-59 (with menopause at 43, no side effects of that, maybe three minor hot flashes and it was done with) my weight has been as high as 182. I always felt bloated etc. Starvation was the only thing that would drop just a mere 5 pounds that quickly found itself after eating regular food again.
Since I started nifedipine in June of 2008 until today, Nov 12 2008, I have dropped 27 1/2 pounds. I feel well and feel that what I have dropped was the bloat, water, whatever I was retaining. In short, I feel I am heading back to what I am supposed to be for my age and height (5′4 1/2″)
This might be just a coincidence, I don’t know. But thought I would post the info in case others have seen the same type of weight loss.
Reqason for being prescribed this drug: I am a Luspus patient, and aside from two heart related episodes 5 years ago and a recent foot problem (seemed like blood pooling/not circulating in my feet. Very painful, hard to walk etc. Calves seemed to sieze up at times. The latter is why the Nifed was given. (Feet look great now). Other than those things, either the thyroid or the lupus or just age resulted in weight gain.
Now the weight is going down. So that makes me happy (’cept for the damn wrinkles. The Powers that be in the heavens above sure have a devilish sense of humor!)
